Donald Trump and Xi Jinping opened Xi’s first U.S. state visit since 2015 with mutual praise: Trump called their relationship a “great friendship,” while Xi offered two giant pandas for Zoo Atlanta. They also began talks on trade, AI and national security.
Trump was expected to press Xi to reduce China’s imports of Iranian oil, release Americans imprisoned in China and stop the flow of fentanyl precursor chemicals. AI safety was also on the agenda; Xi said the countries should ensure AI remains under human control, while Trump has shown little interest in regulating it.
As Xi’s visit began, the White House lifted its ban on Politico, CNN and MS NOW. A judge ordered the Trump administration to reinstate the outlets’ credentials.
