Trump announces plans for $15 billion Iowa steel plant he calls US's largest

President Donald Trump announced plans for Mesabi Metallics to build a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa, which he called the largest in US history. The White House said the facility would use ore from the company's new iron mine in Minnesota.

The White House said the Minnesota mine was the first new iron mine in the United States in 50 years.

The announcement came ahead of November's midterms. Although Trump won Iowa in 2024, Republican Senate candidate Ashley Hinson, who stood with him, is trailing her Democratic rival in polls. AFP said the announcement was aimed at giving Republicans a positive message amid voter anger over living costs and the stalled war with Iran.
