Donald Trump posted a map labeling the Strait of Hormuz “Trump Strait” on Truth Social Friday night, reviving a renaming idea he first floated on Sept. 2. He previously told reporters he did not mean the earlier suggestion and had “just thrown it out there.”
The post came as the war with Iran entered its seventh month. Iran reportedly proposed at the UN General Assembly a deal to reopen the strait and end hostilities within seven days, while beginning nuclear talks, if the U.S. lifted its naval blockade, unfroze Iranian assets and ended sanctions on Iranian oil exports. The Wall Street Journal reported Trump rejected the offer because he did not trust Iran to follow through; the paper also quoted unnamed officials who said he planned a renewed bombing campaign after the midterms.
