Tigers fend off Pirates' five-run eighth to win 8-7

SB Nation

The Tigers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7 to open the weekend series after building an 8-2 lead and allowing five runs in the eighth. Kenley Jansen retired the side in order in the ninth. Starter Jackson Jobe allowed two runs over 5⅓ innings and struck out eight.

Spencer Torkelson hit a double, a two-run triple and a solo homer, finishing a single short of the cycle. The Tigers also scored twice on a dropped third strike in the third inning; a Tigers Data post cited by the article said the last previous instance of a team scoring multiple runs that way was by the Phillies on April 30, 2021.
