Thailand’s two-day civil service break may delay election-ballot ruling

Thailand’s cabinet approved Sept. 28-29 as special holidays for civil servants in Bangkok and three surrounding provinces over heavy rain. The move could delay a court ruling on February’s election ballots, but the court has not said whether its schedule will change.

The court’s decision concerns electoral ballots used in February’s election, and a ruling could put the election results in doubt. The cabinet said the holidays aim to reduce travel and ease traffic disruptions; important official business may continue if department heads deem it appropriate.

Bangkok’s Metropolitan Administration declared the capital a disaster-affected area on Saturday after nearly 300 mm (12 inches) of rain fell in 48 hours, flooding major roads and leaving some cars partly submerged. Floodwater receded Sunday as rainfall eased, but some residents remained stranded at home.
