TfL's guilty plea over fatal Walthamstow bus incident brings £2m fine

TfL was convicted and fined £2m after pleading guilty to a safety breach over Grace Mecaley’s death. The 74-year-old was struck by a bus at a pedestrian crossing at Walthamstow bus station on 15 December 2023; the HSE found TfL had failed to ensure safe circulation.

The court also ordered TfL to pay £5,081 in costs. TfL said it had accepted responsibility for the charge; it added that safety-improvement works at the station were completed in December 2024 and that it would consider next steps regarding the fine.
