Taiwan envoy seeks prompt U.S. arms delivery as $14B package remains undelivered

CBS News

Taiwan's envoy to the U.S., Alexander Yui, said Taiwan hopes to receive U.S. weapons soon, including an undelivered $14 billion package. He said Taiwan was mentioned but not central in the recent Trump-Xi meeting, and Washington's position on Taiwan has not changed.

Yui also agreed with senators questioning why the Trump administration was not delivering more than $1 billion in additional aid. He said Taiwan is increasing its defense budget, needs to procure arms and wants to share more of its defense burden; he said the U.S. has been its main weapons supplier.

Yui said neither side's published statements on meeting outcomes mentioned Taiwan, although China called the issue foundational. He cited U.S. support for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and for Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations. He also disputed Xi Jinping's emphasis on the Chinese Communist Party's role in World War II, saying the Republic of China government fought alongside the U.S. and communist forces had few, if any, skirmishes against Japan; he said the People's Republic of China was established in 1949. Yui described the U.S. and Taiwan as interdependent in semiconductors, AI stacks and servers.
