Fever coach Stephanie White told ESPN she rejected what she called online fabrications about her, saying, “I was not going to personally be hijacked like our league is being hijacked.” Fans booed her introduction before an Aug. 11 game against New York.
White made the remarks to reporters before the Liberty game and said players’ success, health, wellness and safety were her priorities. Sophie Cunningham called the boos “weird” and said the players were proud to play for White; assistant coach Briann January said the hostility made no sense to her and angered her.
White has also faced scrutiny over decisions about Caitlin Clark’s health, rotation choices and game strategy. Indiana entered the playoffs as the No. 6 seed and was set to face the third-seeded Las Vegas Aces, who finished 31–13.
