Stanford acknowledged an AI-altered photo replaced student Billy Ramirez, a Latino man, with an AI-generated Black woman, violating university policy. Ramirez said he felt upset and erased; the two other students in the image were also made thinner.
Stanford said its policy strictly prohibits using AI to produce or alter images of Stanford people, events, research, facilities or achievements; both the alteration and failure to disclose it violated the rule. The university is working with Residential and Dining Enterprises on additional training and review of materials.
After Ramirez posted the altered image, it spread across social media; The Stanford Review’s X post had 14 million views by Wednesday afternoon. Black enrollment fell from 8.6% of the class of 2027 to 4.5% the following year, while Latino/Hispanic enrollment fell from 16.7% to 14.6%. Asian enrollment rose from 28.8% to 33%, and white enrollment from 21.9% to 24.1%. The reported shifts came after the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action for college admissions.
