St. Lucie County ordered permits for 52 roadside license-plate readers revoked and told officials to give known parties 30 days to remove them. Staff found three cameras at locations without permits; the county attorney was still drafting removal letters.
At its Sept. 1 meeting, the commission also stopped new authorizations for license-plate readers and other automated vehicle-identification or tracking systems on county-owned or county-controlled rights-of-way and other county property. Staff found duplicate applications and was comparing crowdsourced camera data with its records to look for more devices. Most permitted readers were installed for law enforcement; the Sheriff's Office and Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie police received advance notice.
The article says Florida statutes cover license-plate readers on state-highway rights-of-way and data retention, but not county roads, where local rules govern placement. St. Lucie's permit action does not reach cameras on nearby private property.
