Amazon began blocking Meta’s Muse shopping agent on Sept. 20, while Shopify said the next day it would let Muse shop across every store on its platform, with checkout through Shop Pay. Shopify shares closed 7.3% higher at $137.92 Monday, then rose nearly 8% Tuesday.
Amazon’s spokesperson said shopping agents should respect providers’ choices about participating, and Meta had declined Amazon’s request to remove Muse. But in January, more than 180 sellers said Amazon’s Buy for Me agent listed their goods without consent; Amazon said sellers could opt out by email. Amazon also blocks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity’s Comet. On Aug. 4, an appeals court ruled Comet users, not Perplexity, accessed Amazon under federal hacking law, lifting an injunction Amazon had won in March.
Shopify’s strategy is to keep checkout on Shop Pay even when a Muse user shops without visiting a merchant’s site. Shop Pay had passed $400 billion in lifetime accelerated gross merchandise volume by June 2026. Shopify’s second-quarter revenue was up 34%, with an 18% free cash flow margin; however, the companies have disclosed no financial terms, and the new channel had not yet produced revenue.
