New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill gave Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell until Friday to resign after a 61-page independent report accused him of sexual harassment. Sherrill said it found repeated state-policy violations; Caldwell’s attorney rejected the findings.
The report, released Thursday, said Caldwell made sexually explicit comments to a female staff member and tried to have a romantic interest promoted to a state-government job.
Caldwell’s attorney, Thomas Calcagni, said the report twisted seemingly benign phrases such as “executive presence” to imply improper motive, relied heavily on the anonymous complainant’s perceptions, characterizations and multi-layered hearsay, and disregarded testimony from staffers who did not share those views and Caldwell’s own account.
