Iranian leaders used their UN visit in New York to revive US talks. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met US envoy Steve Witkoff and said Iran offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if Washington lifts its economic blockade, giving the US seven days to meet Tehran’s conditions.
A regional source familiar with the talks told CNN that Iran’s conditions include waiving sanctions on oil sales, lifting the naval blockade and ending other economic penalties. Analyst Sina Toossi said Tehran’s proposal puts the US first: Washington would take concrete steps before Iran eases pressure on Hormuz.
The June memorandum of understanding quickly collapsed after the Trump administration accused Tehran of firing on ships in Hormuz; Iran accused Washington of breaches through strikes and its refusal to release funds frozen abroad. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said any deal would take hard work over time and involve mediators. Pezeshkian told the UN Iran would never “bow down,” though hardliners criticized the visit and Araghchi’s meeting with Witkoff. Iran also discussed Strait management with Oman; it was unclear whether that framework was part of the offer or had been presented to Washington.
