The Social Security Administration’s latest baby-name data records “Trump” as a first name for seven U.S. boys born last year, the name’s first appearance in its records. The same data puts Donald, the president’s first name, at an all-time low in popularity.
Most experts quoted expect “Trump” to be a temporary blip. Nameberry editor Sophie Kihm said she does not expect the name to appear in the 2026 SSA data; Appellation Mountain creator Abby Sandel likewise called the seven-name result a fluke.
Baby-name experts described a tradition of presidential surnames becoming given names. Theodore Roosevelt’s surname began to be used as a first name in 1885 and ranked among the top 150 boys’ names from 1902 through 1908; experts said the broader trend faded by the mid-20th century.
