Anthony Scaramucci told Newsmax Friday that President Donald Trump should finalize a trade deal with Canada, arguing it could help Republicans in competitive Senate races in Maine, Michigan and Ohio by easing economic pressure and trade uncertainty.
Republicans are defending Maine’s seat, where Sen. Susan Collins is seeking reelection, and Ohio’s, where Sen. Jon Husted faces Democrat Sherrod Brown in a special election. In Michigan, former Rep. Mike Rogers is the Republican nominee for an open seat.
U.S.-Canada talks collapsed in August, and Canada responded to new U.S. tariffs with countermeasures. The Trump administration says Ottawa walked away from a near-final deal and continued discriminatory treatment of U.S. exports. It says measures Trump ordered Sept. 8, including import restrictions scheduled for Monday, aim to protect U.S. farmers, manufacturers and workers. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Friday the administration sees no urgent need for an agreement.
