Voters in São Tomé and Príncipe say jobs and opportunities are needed to stem youth emigration, the main issue ahead of Sunday's parliamentary election. A 2025 World Bank report estimated nearly 40,000 people—at least 18% of the population—lived abroad.
Emigration has surged in recent years, largely as young people seek work and better prospects. Portugal is the main destination, followed by Angola and Gabon. Residents also cited rising living costs, poor public services and power cuts, which remain a concern despite recent improvements. Former prime minister Gabriel Da Costa said labor shortages were hurting sectors such as construction.
Seven parties are contesting 55 parliamentary seats, and major parties say attracting investment is essential. ADI candidate and Foreign Minister Ilza Amado Vaz said her party aims to attract investors and expand tourism that respects biodiversity. Turnout is another concern: nearly six in 10 voters stayed away from July's presidential election.
