Santa Monica will dismantle its 85-year-old Pier sign in the coming weeks while replacing the 1939 bridge it sits atop. The city says the sign will be restored and returned when construction is expected to finish in late 2027; a smaller replica is already in place.
The sign will be taken apart piece by piece, from its neon tubing to its crown and support columns, and transported to Las Vegas for restoration by YESCO, a sign company known for work on the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign.
The bridge replacement is budgeted at around $30 million and is intended to improve stability and public access. Pedestrian and vehicle routes will be rerouted at points during construction; the city says the bridge and sign work is slated to finish well before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
