Two Safety Cars repeatedly bunched the field after Russell had built a lead of nearly 10 seconds over Oscar Piastri. The second followed Franco Colapinto hitting teammate Pierre Gasly, who was pushed into Lando Norris; all three retired. Isack Hadjar took third on his return after missing three races with a wrist injury.
Russell started from pole, while Antonelli began 16th after a mistake in Q1 ended his qualifying session.
