Kansas City beat Chicago 5-4 as Maikel Garcia’s seventh-inning single scored Bobby Witt Jr. for the winning run. The Royals’ 4-0 first-inning lead was erased when the White Sox tied it in the third, but Kansas City’s bullpen allowed no further runs.
The Royals scored four in the first, including Maikel Garcia’s two-run single and Vinnie Pasquantino’s RBI double. Chicago answered with four in the third against Seth Lugo, with consecutive hits from Kyle Teel, Miguel Vargas and Munetaka Murakami tying the game.
Anthony Gose and Connor Thomas combined for 3⅔ scoreless innings. Lucas Erceg retired all three batters he faced in the eighth on nine pitches, and Steven Cruz earned the save in the ninth, striking out two before allowing a single and getting a flyout. It was Cruz’s first appearance since he blew a save against Pittsburgh on Saturday.
