Redfin’s Census-based study puts Houston first among millennial destinations, with 16,365 more moving in than out (0.9% net migration), and San Antonio first for Gen Z, with a net inflow of 10,678 (3.1%). Austin and Dallas also rank in Gen Z’s top five.
Gen Z’s remaining top-five destinations were Washington, D.C. (third), Nashville (fourth) and Dallas (fifth). Redfin also identified Houston-to-Dallas as one of Gen Z’s most popular routes, with 6,862 people making the move.
Redfin defines millennials as people in their 30s and 40s. Dallas ranked second among millennial destinations, with 13,072 more arrivals than departures (0.7%); Baltimore, Las Vegas and Atlanta completed the top five. Redfin said median home-sale prices in all five were below $450,000. New York was the metro both generations were leaving fastest, followed by Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco.
