Pennsylvania's efficiency bill for 15 appliance and water-fixture categories passed the state House, but Senate action has stalled. Advocacy groups project nearly $291 million in annual utility savings by 2035; standards would apply only to new purchases, not existing products.
The bill covers commercial appliances and household water fixtures, including ovens, fryers, dishwashers, gas fireplaces, toilets and showerheads. The groups estimate total consumer savings could reach $7.7 billion by 2050.
The groups' report estimates the standards would prevent 269,000 metric tons of global-warming pollution annually, equivalent to taking nearly 63,000 cars off the road each year. ASAP's analysis also projects that by 2050, electricity savings would exceed the annual use of all households in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh combined.
