Sen. Rand Paul told Newsmax he is considering a 2028 presidential run but has not decided and will closely watch this year’s midterm results. He says the GOP needs a free-market conservative to challenge its populist economic policies.
Paul said a campaign could spur debate over the GOP’s direction on trade and the economy, calling the party’s populism an economic fallacy. He ran for the Republican nomination in 2016 and suspended his campaign after finishing fifth in the Iowa caucuses.
His comments followed former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s statement a day earlier that he was considering a third presidential run. Christie, who sought the GOP nomination in 2016 and 2024, also said he would wait to see the midterm results before deciding.
