The Red Sox and Cubs are scheduled for a Friday doubleheader at Fenway, at 1:05 and 6:05 p.m. ET. Saturday’s game is still on the schedule but is expected to be rained out; if postponed, it would move to Sunday, possibly at Tampa’s Tropicana Field.
The Cubs clinched a playoff berth Thursday and are playing for seeding. The Red Sox are likely to be the second Wild Card, but a scenario involving tiebreakers could leave them third.
Boston announced Alex Gamboa and Brayan Bello as its Friday starters; the probable matchups list Clay Holmes against Gamboa and David Peterson against Bello. Willson Contreras said not to count on him playing this weekend and that he may not feel ready by Tuesday. Alex Bregman is questionable after a foul ball hit him in the face while he was on deck; he may try to play if he is not in pain.
