Poll finds 59% of Democratic electorate back hypothetical military takeover to oust Trump

The New Republic

A Liberal Currents survey of the Democratic electorate found 59% of respondents approved a hypothetical military takeover to remove Donald Trump, while 28% opposed it. Impeachment and 25th Amendment removal drew higher net sentiment: 80% and 77%, respectively.

The author warns a coup could reignite passions behind the Jan. 6 insurrection and be difficult to contain. Citing James N. Green, the article says Brazil’s armed forces initiated nine attempted takeovers since 1889, five of them successful; the 1964 intervention led to a 21-year dictatorship.

The article notes a hypothetical political alternative: if Republicans are badly beaten in the midterms, they may have an incentive to persuade Trump to leave early and hand power to Vice President JD Vance, giving Vance two years to run as an incumbent. The author says Trump may resist because returning to private life would bring renewed legal battles.
