Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Sunday the conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz remain unchanged and only a negotiated deal can break the deadlock with Washington. Mediators have yet to relay the U.S. final position after Trump's reported rejection.
Iran sent the proposal to Washington through Qatari mediators and presented it during the U.N. General Assembly. Under the plan, an agreement would start a seven-day countdown to reopening the strait and pausing regional fighting; broader negotiations on issues agreed by both sides would follow.
A U.S. official had previously described the mediated discussions as “positive and constructive.” Separately, The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. officials said Trump had privately indicated to aides that renewed bombing of Iran could become necessary after the November midterms, though he has signaled reluctance to launch another major military operation.
