Police evacuate Whelford after arrests on suspicion of explosives offences near RAF Fairford

Police declared a major incident near RAF Fairford on Sunday, arrested several men on suspicion of explosives offences and evacuated Whelford residents. Army bomb-disposal experts were examining vehicles; officers said they believed the incident was contained.

Residents were taken to a nearby leisure centre, the BBC reported. RAF Fairford is also used by the US Air Force and is the UK base of its 501st Combat Support Wing.

A government spokesperson said Prime Minister Andy Burnham was being kept updated and declined further comment while the investigation continued. The US Air Force said personnel at Fairford would remain vigilant and take appropriate action to ensure the safety and security of its service members, civilians, contractors and their families.
