Russian strikes killed at least two in Ukraine overnight into Sunday, officials said: one in Kyiv and one in Odesa. Two people were injured in Odesa. Hours earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said his German counterpart had repeated Berlin’s condemnation of Russia.
Ukraine’s emergency service said a drone hit a non-residential building in Kyiv, where a man was found dead, and another struck a one-story vehicle repair shop. Firefighters battled the blaze into early Sunday. Odesa regional military administration head Oleh Kiper said the region was struck several times.
The New York meeting, held during the U.N. General Assembly at Johann Wadephul’s request, was believed to be the first one-on-one between the ministers since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion. Lavrov said Wadephul had merely repeated Germany’s official condemnation of Russia. A German delegation official said Wadephul was open to better ties if Russia’s leadership showed genuine willingness to end the war. Relations had soured after Berlin blamed the Kremlin for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig airport last month.
