Police arrest five over suspected explosives offences near RAF Fairford

Police arrested five men on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act after a report around 12:45 a.m. Sunday of three suspicious vehicles heading toward RAF Fairford. About 85 households were advised to evacuate as an army team examined the vehicles.

Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone said the five men remained in custody. Police said they believed the incident was contained, with a 400-metre cordon in place around the vehicles.

RAF Fairford hosts the US Air Force. In July, Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned the UK against allowing the US to operate bombers from the base; the report does not say the warning was related to Sunday's incident.
