MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki reported Phillies manager Don Mattingly called Luis Arraez’s ankle update “kind of not a great one.” Zolecki said the team appeared to hope Arraez might improve enough to pinch-hit; a stint on the injured list was possible if he did not.
Arraez suffered the left ankle sprain in Thursday’s 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers and left after reaching first base on an errant throw. The Phillies were set to open their final regular-season series, a three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays, on Friday.
With three regular-season games remaining, Philadelphia held a two-game lead over Arizona for the final National League wild-card spot. The Diamondbacks held the tiebreaker.
