The Pentagon’s Iran-war database now lists 19 U.S. military deaths, up from 18, after adding an unnamed Army officer who died in a medical emergency while traveling to the Middle East. Other officials told The Washington Post at least 22 service members died in the region.
Five U.S. officials told The Washington Post last week that at least 22 service members had died in the region since military action began Feb. 28; a sixth put the count at 23. Some deaths absent from the register involved troops deployed there during active hostilities but not killed directly in combat. The database lists 14 deaths under Operation Epic Fury and five under “Overseas Operations,” including the officer added this week; it also lists more than 820 wounded. The latter category includes deaths that occurred after a brief July ceasefire collapsed.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rejected claims of intentional omissions, saying the Pentagon could not and would not hide a combat death. A “line of duty” inquiry after each death determines whether it occurred during active duty, a status that dictates financial survivor benefits. Four service members killed in action were temporarily left out of the count earlier this year. Pentagon releases acknowledged two service members’ deaths at Middle East bases targeted by Iranian strikes, but neither name appears in DCAS.
