Former Maine Gov. Paul LePage, now running for Congress, says his son's father-in-law is in the U.S. legally, has a work permit and is being deported. He called it wrong but did not identify the man or his country of origin.
LePage said the man was being deported because he came from a country “not to the liking of certain people in Washington.” LePage has previously referred to Devon Raymond, from Jamaica, as an adopted son; Raymond was not legally adopted, and it is unclear whether he is the relative.
LePage reiterated support for ICE this week, saying officers have a job to do; he said he probably would target gangs and criminals, not everyone with a work permit who had lived in the U.S. for decades. Separately, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero was fatally shot during an ICE warrant operation in Biddeford on July 13. DHS said the officer fired over public-safety concerns and later claimed Guerrero weaponized his vehicle; no supporting evidence has been made public. A lawyer for Guerrero's family said Tuesday a bullet struck an empty seat and his daughter was not in the vehicle.
