Nightengale sees Payton Tolle as key in Red Sox-Yankees wild card

Red Sox rookie Payton Tolle is expected to be key in Boston’s AL wild-card series against the Yankees, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports. Tolle gave up one earned run and struck out 18 in 13 innings over two starts against New York this season.

Across 26 starts and 148.2 innings this season, Tolle is 9–6 with a 3.03 ERA, 171 strikeouts and a 1.096 WHIP.

Boston has clinched a postseason berth, and the best-of-three series in New York is set to begin next week. Tolle is expected to make one start in the series.
