Musk pitches Austin–San Antonio tunnel he says could exceed 200 mph

Musk says The Boring Company is working on an Austin–San Antonio “precursor Hyperloop” that could carry vehicles above 200 mph and cut the 80-mile drive from up to 2.5 hours in traffic to under 30 minutes; route and timing remain unknown.

The Boring Company said it would be “excited and honored” to build the tunnel. The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority said it learned about the proposal from Musk’s post, while a Bexar County spokesperson said the county had not heard from the company. Musk has not disclosed the cost or what the tunnel would carry.

The only Boring Company tunnel system carrying passengers is Las Vegas’s Vegas Loop, where Tesla drivers travel at around 35 mph. A previous proposal for a San Antonio airport-to-downtown tunnel stalled, as did plans in Chicago and between New York and Washington, D.C. In 2022, the company said it had started testing a full-scale Hyperloop described on its website as capable of speeds above 600 mph.
