A WARN filing says Microsoft plans to eliminate 277 jobs in Washington’s Puget Sound region on Nov. 21; employees were notified Sept. 22. The cuts include 252 positions at Redmond facilities and 25 remote roles. Microsoft says the facilities will remain open.
Business Insider reported that the broader round involves roughly 500 additional jobs, mostly in Xbox, with smaller reductions in cloud and AI. The local filing lists roles in software engineering, game design and production, art, technical writing, marketing, product management, data science and other corporate functions. Microsoft said some affected positions could move to operations elsewhere.
Microsoft said in July it planned to reduce Xbox by about 3,200 roles during fiscal 2027. It cited operating margins three to 10 times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses, a smaller installed base, higher costs and slower-than-expected growth from Game Pass, its multiplatform strategy and content portfolio. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said the eliminated positions were not being replaced by AI, while AI was changing how work gets done.
