Microsoft is adding coding and task-delegating AI features to its Copilot app, with Home, Code and Autopilot tabs set to roll out in the coming weeks. Code lets users build tools using GitHub technology; the company says it will charge by usage, not seats.
Home combines conversational chat and task delegation across Word, Excel and PowerPoint, while Autopilot serves as a productivity assistant. The update also adds Fabric IQ to bring enterprise-data context into Copilot and FinOps tools to help manage AI spending and optimize it for business value.
Gartner analyst Larry Cannell said Anthropic’s recent agentic coding and knowledge-work offerings may have influenced the timing; he said Microsoft would normally wait until Ignite for a change of this scale. Microsoft reported more than 30 million paid 365 Copilot seats during its Q4 2026 call in July, and said the number of customers with more than 50,000 paid seats was growing.
