Michigan suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Iowa after red-zone failures and a stalled late drive. The Wolverines led 19-14 with under three minutes left, but three straight runs stalled the drive and they punted with 1:46 remaining.
Michigan outgained Iowa 429 yards to 283 (276 passing and 153 rushing, against Iowa’s 227 and 56) and held possession for 34:29, but went 2-for-4 in the red zone. A failed fourth-and-1 at the Iowa 18 turned the ball over on downs; after reaching Iowa’s 19 while leading 10-7, Underwood threw an interception. On a later trip, Michigan gained one yard in three plays from the Iowa 5 and settled for a field goal.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham said Iowa had shown Michigan nothing different from what the Wolverines had seen on film, and called red-zone execution one of the differences in the game. He said Michigan needed to execute better.
