Meta says ads for Alex Gibney’s Musk documentary are being restored

Meta says it is restoring ads for Alex Gibney’s documentary “Musk,” after The Hollywood Reporter reported that Meta, TikTok, YouTube and X had rejected trailer promotions. Meta called its rejection an error; it has not provided further details.

The Hollywood Reporter said Meta, TikTok and YouTube cited political content; Bleecker Street, the film’s U.S. distributor, told the outlet it was appealing the rejections. The article says it is unclear how a documentary trailer would qualify as campaign advertising.

“Musk” premiered at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this month and is scheduled for U.S. theatrical release on October 9. Universal Pictures said it will release the documentary in theaters but is still working out its release strategy, after a report that it was wavering on international distribution.
