At Meta Connect, Mark Zuckerberg made Muse central to Meta’s future. The AI agent has risen to the top of Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store, and Zuckerberg said millions use it. Meta plans to take a small cut of transactions made through Muse.
During Connect, chief AI officer Alexandr Wang demonstrated Muse scheduling meetings, negotiating cable rates and making purchases across services. Meta also plans to bring the agent to its next-generation VR Glasses, where users can speak to a digital avatar, and to Muse Charm, a handheld device that works without a phone or smart glasses. Deepwater Asset Management partner Gene Munster said the shift toward agents could reduce Meta’s reliance on algorithms recommending content based on users’ past browsing.
Zuckerberg said Muse Secure VM keeps users’ information on their own secure virtual machine; he said the upcoming Muse Confidential VM will prevent even Meta from seeing it. Meta may take time to earn users’ trust: it paid a $5 billion settlement in 2019 over data-privacy issues related to Cambridge Analytica. William Blair analyst Ralph Schackart wrote that trust could become an important competitive differentiator as consumers increasingly trust AI systems with financial information, communications, calendars and purchasing decisions.
