Merriam-Webster has added 1,400 words and definitions, including “looksmaxxing,” “copium,” “vibe coding” and “cuffing season.” It says entries must show frequent, widespread and meaningful use over time, rather than being short-lived trends.
“Looksmaxxing” describes the sometimes extreme pursuit of physical perfection, while “copium” means avoiding, denying or minimizing a negative or embarrassing situation. “Vibe coding” is using an AI system to generate computer code; “cuffing season” refers to looking for a short-term partner during colder months.
Merriam-Webster says there is no committee, advocacy or meeting process for new word inclusion in this edition. A suggested word can be rejected and admitted later as time shows whether its use remains relevant.
