Memphis Grizzlies unveiled Northeast Prep's refurbished Dream Court on Sept. 25, adding two new hoops, outdoor benches and artwork by Memphis artist Siphne Sylve to the school's outdoor space. Players Cam Boozer and Jaylen Wells surprised students.
Joseph Wells, the school's physical education teacher, said its old setup consisted of two hoops in a worn parking lot; one lacked a backboard, there were no proper lines, and staff sometimes moved their cars so students could use the space. He estimates about 134 students in grades 9–12 attend Northeast Prep each day, many for a limited period.
Wells said he sees the court as a way to give students structure and keep them engaged. The Dream Court series continues the Grizzlies' effort to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s messaging and vision by refurbishing basketball courts across Memphis.
