Arizona State hockey coach Greg Powers repeatedly declined Wednesday to answer questions about the Aug. 20 workout during which sophomore Matthew Mayich collapsed. Mayich remains in a coma at a neurological institute after being transferred from a local hospital.
The workout was described as “grueling” and led by an ex-Green Beret; Mayich allegedly showed signs of distress and could not complete tasks. A report Arizona State released Tuesday said Powers and his staff had not submitted the training activities to the school’s strength-and-conditioning coaches for review. It assigned no blame.
Mayich’s lawyer said earlier this month that he had “zero chance of recovery.” Asked how he would reassure parents, Powers said Arizona State remained a great place to play hockey, citing its education, campus, arena and support for student-athletes.
