A Massachusetts fusion-center report named SparrowMap, a government-vehicle tracker, while saying it saw no indication that threat actors in the state planned criminal use of its data. Records obtained by Reason show Wisconsin’s fusion center redistributed the report.
The report cited August 2026 Reddit discussions encouraging uploads of government-vehicle footage, including ICE vehicles, and proposals for a camera mesh network and oversight committee. Separately, NSPM-7, signed Sept. 25, 2025, directs federal agencies to address domestic extremism and organized political violence. The article says civil-liberties organizations have raised concerns about how broadly the administration might interpret it, but cites no specific group’s formal statement.
According to Reason’s account and SparrowMap’s descriptions, vehicle recognition runs on contributors’ devices; raw video is not uploaded, non-government detections are anonymized and removed quickly, and users confirm government-vehicle identifications before publication. SparrowMap says it processes roughly 300,000 vehicles daily across about 14,196 cameras; those figures have not been independently verified.
