Sen. Ruben Gallego called President Donald Trump’s effort to rebrand artificial intelligence as “super intelligence” “f***ing stupid.” Democrats are discussing guardrails, and Sen. Ron Wyden said they would investigate AI if they regain Senate control.
Trump has called alarm about AI’s dangers a “hoax” and said the only guardrails needed were a “strong and smart” president. Wyden said he was dubious about Trump’s remarks, describing them as an effort to find election-year wins.
Reps. Lori Trahan and Jim Obernolte have legislation for a tiered system of AI regulation and independent audits of AI firms. A Politico survey released last week found 61% of Trump voters considered AI to pose a moderate or significant risk.
