The Prison Service apologised to Karol Kelly’s family after a social-media video of photos taken inside Magilligan Prison appeared to show one of his killers posing. A mobile phone recovered in an intelligence-led search on Tuesday was passed to the PSNI.
The Director General of Prisons met Kelly’s family and offered what the service called a “sincere apology” for the additional pain and upset caused. Sean Anderson was one of two men jailed for life in 2023 for Kelly’s 2018 murder in Londonderry; the report does not identify which man appears in the photos.
The images also show derogatory statements about Justice Minister Naomi Long. The Prison Service says introducing contraband is a criminal offence and possessing an unauthorised mobile phone is a serious breach of prison rules. It declined further comment because a criminal investigation is ongoing.
