Luminate study points to likely viewership drops after long TV breaks

A Luminate study says full-season viewing is likely to drop after long gaps between streaming seasons, though the relationship is not straightforward. It finds binge releases tend to spike then fall, while weekly releases maintain steadier engagement.

Study author Tyler Aquilina, a Luminate analyst, cited Netflix’s “Wednesday,” whose viewership fell nearly 60% after it returned almost three years after its first season, and Prime Video’s “The Rings of Power,” which fell almost as steeply after a two-year gap.

Aquilina said about 40% of releases in the first half of 2026 were binge releases, a strategy he said major subscription video-on-demand platforms still used more than some might expect.
