Motley Fool contributor Leo Sun says he would buy Vanguard’s S&P 500 ETF (VOO) for a 20-year hold, citing its 0.03% annual expense ratio and broad index exposure. He says investors would need to withstand sharp market declines to pursue long-term gains.
Sun cites the S&P 500’s average annual total return of about 10% since 1957 and says VOO had returned 833% in total since its 2010 launch. He also notes the index fell 57% from 2007 to 2009, 34% in 2020 and 25% in 2022, measured peak to trough.
