Germany coach Jurgen Klopp said Alexander Nübel will start against Greece on Sunday, giving Marc-André ter Stegen a break after his midweek return to the team against the Netherlands. Klopp said Nübel’s start was agreed and praised Ter Stegen’s display despite a few mistakes.
Klopp said he was surprised Ter Stegen had been viewed critically after the Netherlands game, pointing to the opposing coach’s post-match remark that the goalkeeper had “saved our bacon.” He said all three Germany goalkeepers had impressed him and that Nübel deserved his chance.
Ter Stegen had missed the 2026 World Cup because of injury. Germany are also due to play Serbia and Greece again during the international break, giving Klopp further opportunities to assess his squad.
