James “Jim” Copenhaver, 76, critically wounded at Donald Trump’s July 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, his family said. He was one of two people seriously injured in the shooting; his family did not state a cause of death.
At the July 13, 2024, rally, gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks fired from a nearby rooftop, killing attendee Corey Comperatore and critically wounding Copenhaver and David Dutch. Crooks was killed by a Secret Service countersniper; Dutch survived.
In a 2025 interview, Copenhaver said he wanted answers about information he believed had been withheld from public accounts of the investigation and criticized what he saw as a lack of accountability for rally security. He later sued the U.S. government, seeking $150,000 and alleging negligence, recklessness and carelessness by the Secret Service; the case remains pending.
