Former San Jose vice principal Ruben Guzman pleaded not guilty to federal charges of attempted sex trafficking, coercion and enticement of a minor; former Valley Christian coach Todd Baldwin pleaded guilty to four counts of online enticement and receiving child pornography.
Prosecutors say Guzman tried to pay for sex with someone he believed was younger than 14 and attempted sexual activity with someone he believed was younger than 18. He was indicted Wednesday, arraigned that day and ordered into U.S. Marshals custody. The trafficking charge carries a 15-year mandatory minimum and the enticement charge a 10-year minimum; if convicted, he faces up to life in prison on each count.
Baldwin admitted persuading teenage boys online to create sexually explicit material from October 2021 to August 2023. Prosecutors said victims attended Valley Christian and Live Oak High School; he met at least one through his Valley Christian job. He paid four boys, ages 16 and 17, thousands of dollars and told some he planned to resell the material. Prosecutors said a home search found devices containing child sexual abuse material; Baldwin also admitted enticing two more victims. He remains free on bond under electronic monitoring and home detention pending Jan. 26 sentencing; he faces 10 years to life.
