Ryan Murphy says Jessica Lange disliked Fiona Goode’s “knotty pine” line in “Coven” and refused a second take; the single performance is the one used in the show. “American Horror Story” Season 13 will recreate the scene when it premieres Sept. 24 on FX.
Season 13 brings Lange back for her first appearance since a cameo in “Apocalypse” (Season 8); her last full season was “Freak Show” (Season 4). Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Evan Peters, Gabourey Sidibe, Frances Conroy, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd and Leslie Grossman also return as characters from earlier seasons.
Murphy said recurring actors often suggest different lines when they think the script does not fit their characters, and he welcomes their input. He described the cast as collaborators with deep ownership of their roles.
